Ricinus communis, popularly known as castor bean, is a plant from the Euphorbiaceae family. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Ricinus and subtribe Ricininae.
Castor is native from the south-eastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa and India, although it is widespread throughout tropical regions.
The castor bean is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. The beans contain a high percentage of oil rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. The beans also contain ricin, a soluble toxin present in all over the plant.
